Reviews of the Best Redcat Racing RC Cars
Redcat Racing Shockwave Nitro Buggy
This is an off road RC car that is designed to handle all kinds of rough situations on the trail. It features single speed transmission that combines with a pull start Vertex VX.16 engine as well as 4WD to provide top speeds when racing with friends. These features also help improve toughness and durability. It is controlled using a 2.4GHz radio, which allows you to run several vehicles at the same time.
The Redcat Racing Shockwave Buggy is a NITRO vehicle that requires nitro fuel, 80142a glow plug ignitor and 12 AA batteries to run. It also features composite brakes, 6061 anodized aluminum chassis as well as capped oil filled shocks.
These combined with the single transmission make this a durable, easy to use and reliable RC vehicle. With a ground clearance of 12mm, you can rest assured that the Shockwave Nitro Buggy has superior speed and performance. Given its small size, it’s quite surprising that this RC car weighs a little over 7 pounds.
Another notable feature is the Nitro 2.67 cc Vertex motor that provides enough power for this car to race efficiently, regardless of the terrain. On matters of speed, this RC car can charge up to 35 miles per hour, which is standard. The only qualm is that although they are required, batteries aren’t included with the purchase. Fuel is also purchased separately.
What we like:
- 4WD single transmission without reverse
- Easy control with a 2.4 GHz radio
- Powerful Nitro engine with pull start
- Strong and durable construction
What we don’t like:
- Batteries and fuel are sold separately
- Could be faster
Redcat Racing Electric Volcano EPX Truck
Redcat’s Elctric Volcano EPX is a monster truck that is perfect for general bashing. It is designed for off road use and as such; you can launch over, smash through or even climb most obstacles in your way. The best thing is that it does all of the above with impressive stability. Combined with solid durability, respectable top speed and good handling, this makes the Volcano EPX one of the best RC trucks you’ll find on the market.
It has a top speed of 19mph, which is not bad considering it maintains top speed as well as superior stability on the roughest of terrains. Its prowess on rough trails is attributed to its high clearance and large wheels. The four wheel drive is also useful and so the independent suspension since it’s well balanced.
The Volcano EPX is very durable, thanks to the high clearance combined with the monstrous wheels. The wheels and suspension do a great job of absorbing most of the shock. This durability is reinforced with sealed electronic castings to protect them from damage by water. It comes with a rechargeable NiMh battery, which offers a runtime of 7-10 minutes.
The remote control runs on eight AA batteries, which are sold separately. The remote is easy to use and allows for easy navigation when moving forward, backward, right or left. Like most, this remote uses a 2.4 GHz pistol-grip transmitter with proportional control. By providing more control, it becomes a little too complicated for kids.
What we like:
- Large wheels for increased capability off the road
- Durable and strong construction
- Four wheel drive
- Waterproof electric components
What we don’t like:
- Included battery has a short life
Redcat Racing Lightning EPX Drift
This is a hobby grade RC car that is features a stylish design as well as a wheels that allow for drifting when the vehicle is turning. While this obstructs speed and handling and does have any practical benefit, it goes a long way in perfecting maneuvers that most RC cars cannot achieve.
Unlike other RC vehicles that improve performance by providing utmost speed, terrain versatility and handling, this one does things a little differently. Redcat Racing uses components that focus mainly on drifting. Such include hard, relatively slick tires which also make gaining traction quite a challenge. And while speed may increase as the motor breaks in, the fastest it can go is 15mph.
These may seem like more of a blow than benefit for many but truth be told, improved drifting opens a new way of experiencing the world of RC vehicles. As such, this is a great option for those who love a challenge. Other than drifting around corners, the Lightning EPX Drift also allows you to perform tricks spins. That said, there is no better way of unleashing your creativity than with this car.
Being a slick RC vehicle, this model is not as durable as most models on this list. It has a low ground allowance meaning that the chassis bears the brunt of most crashing and not the wheels as one would expect. The remote is a 2.4GHz pistol transmitter with proportional control. Combined with difficult handling, this makes the Lightning EPX more suitable for experienced hobbyists.
What we like:
- Excellent drifting
What we don’t like:
- Low speed
- Difficult handling
Redcat Racing Vortex SS Desert Nitro Truck
The Vortex SS Desert from Redcat Racing is a great purchase for someone in need of a high-performance, gas powered RC truck. It combines great looks, incredible performance and cool features quite well. The truck is powered by a 3.00 cc sh-18 engine, hence the reason why it can charge up to 40-50 mph. This makes it faster than electric remote control vehicles.
Another notable feature is the tough, 2.5mm thick aluminum chassis. It is kept sturdy by a 4 oil filled aluminum –bodied shockies. Both of the above team up to protect against damage from anything in its path. The two speed transmission also contributes a great deal to the high speed. You will certainly need plenty of space to run this truck since it’s easy to lose control once it hits the second gear.
Given the amount of power it has, the 4WD is a welcome feature. And contrary to what you may expect, the Vortex SS Desert is not waterproof. As such, you cannot use the truck in muddy, rainy, icy or wet conditions.
Depending on how you drive, a full Nitro tank provides up to 15-20 minutes of playtime before requiring a refill. On battery requirements, this truck needs four while the receiver requires eight. It’s important to note that these aren’t included in the purchase.
What we like:
- Great speed limits of 40-50 mph
- 2.5 mm thick aluminum chassis paired with oil-filled shock absorbers for superior performance and durability
- Suitable for off-road use
- Two speed transmission
What we don’t like:
- Doesn’t come with batteries
Redcat Racing Rampage XT Gas Truck
Fifth scale monster trucks are the biggest, most badass RC trucks in the world and the Rampage XT demonstrates why. It is powered by a 30 cc HY two-stroke engine, making it a brushless power junkie that runs on 93 octane as well as AMSOIL Saber Pro Synthetic two stroke oil. The power is a little soft considering its high price.
On the issue of durability, the Rampage XT can handle everything from asphalt and concrete to small wood jumps and dirt jumps without breaking. This monster is awesome, huge and makes eight scale trucks look minute. Its body was modeled after the 2011 extended Cab Chevy.
It comes with black 5 wishbone design wheels, which have chrome beadlock rings. Mounted on these wheels are massive tires with a split chevron design and measuring 8-inches tall by 5.5-inches wide.
The fact that it is not waterproof is a bummer for many given its high price. Depending on whether it comes with a clear or painted body, it can be either be almost ready to run (ARR) or ready to run (RTR). Also included with the purchase is a Redcat DSM-2C 2.4 GHZ radio, making maneuvering in all directions effortless.
Other features include dual disc brakes, 2200 mAh receiver battery with charger, single speed transmission, 4mm Aluminum 6061T6 chassis, ground clearance of 72mm and 700 cc fuel tank.
What we like:
- Sturdy and durable construction
- Fun to drive
- Huge tires, Chevy body and chrome bead lock rings
What we don’t like:
- Cutting corners isn’t easy
- Pricey
- Not waterproof
